I’m a dork. It’s true
There are two TV shows I remember watching when I was barely old enough to walk. He-Man, and Star Trek.
I’m not one of those collectible, dress me up for conventions, types. In fact I’d never been to a convention. When I heard Spock was coming to Vulcan, Alberta (a long time Trekkie attraction) I decided not to miss this!
Vulcan is tiny. A population of less than two thousand. However, it’s said that for the parade there may have been as many as six thousand people in the city limits. They also brought in a bunch more memorabilia (toys) for the tourists (dorks).
It didn’t take long for me to find where they were selling the Romulan Ale, which was essentially blue beer shipped from the states. I also bought a tribble that vibrates and squeels when you beat it…neato!
My sister, her boyfriend and I had lunch at a random cafe on main street after seeing the back of Nimoy’s head (on his way in to his private touch of the trek station). At this point people were really starting to fill the town.
The parade itself was simple but fun. You had the federation ship fighting the truck, er, bird of prey and Nimoy in the back of an SUV smiling and waving. By the time the parade got within a few blocks of the stage for the big unveiling, people were reaching into the car to shake his hand. It was crowded, but people were civil to those around them. I spent most of my time side stepping down the street trying to get a clear shot, which I managed to snap off a few decent ones. I’ll admit I could have taken more care with my cameras setting and steadiness. But a picture of Spock is a picture of Spock
The mayor (dressed like a Vulcan) announced Nimoy on stage and unveiled a bronze statue of Spock. He also put his hands in something like wet cement to go with it.
His speech was nice, brief and a little quiet, but honest. By the time the mayor was halfway done his speech (which he should have done BEFORE Spock went on) half the people had shuffled down the block to go see the famous ears worn in the first season. The lineup to that was nuts, and I didn’t bother.
Overall a good time though!
