The irony of taking a picture of your new camera with your new favourite lens is that you can only use your second favourites to shoot it.
I picked up this bad boy at Saneal Cameras HQ in downtown Calgary, and it was well worth the $.
Going from a Canon EOS Rebel XSi to the 50D shows some significant improvements in feel, performance, and user friendliness. Also, upgrading from SD to CF proved to be expensive
A side note about Compact Flash and memory cards in general. Never ever skimp out on the card. A $20 card is a $20 guarantee that you’ll lose your photos at the worst possible moment. Still don’t believe me? Read Committed to Memory. Go with something at least 30 MB/s and 200X, then all the guess work is taken out. Also, opt for two 8GB cards rather than one 16GB. if a card fails, you’ll only lose (up to) half. Buy on eBay, buy from China, it saves a few bucks
I haven’t bothered with the 50D’s battery grip yet, because the battery life is another huge improvement. In fact, the 50D’s battery was originally designed for HD video cameras. Eventually I will get my hands on the grip (which holds three of those lovely lithium’s) but for now one is plenty for a day shoot.
The 24-105mm f4.0L is considered one of the best, and an all around good one to have for just about any type of shoot. At the 1.6x crop, it shoots at 38-168mm. If you want to get wide wide on a crop sensor, you need a 10-22mm (1.6=16-35mm). If you already have it then you’re luckier than I am
The widest I got in my kit right now is 16-35mm (1.6=26-56mm) but hey, at least it’s L glass.
A couple other little things. I have a Micnova hand strap. It hooks into the tripod socket and right strap loop. Just gives that added bit of security when releasing your camera from the tripod a lot. The tripod in this case is the Manfrotto 7301. Nothing fancy, pivots three ways and holds my 50D study (so far, fingers crossed) and is a nice starter tripod at $175.
